- Rhapsody for Piano and Universe
-
The Cornelia Street Cafe:
29 Cornelia Street, New York, NY, USA
(MAP)
- My friend, particle physicist Matt Strassler and I are collaborating for a cool series called "Entertaining Science" that happens every month in the West Village at The Cornelia Street Cafe. Music and particle physics in a bar - how else would you spend a Sunday evening?
Here's the blurb from the website:
"So, a particle physicist and a singer-songwriter walk into a club in the West Village... and it's no joke!
For at its heart, the physical world is a musical world. From the vibrations of a guitar string to the sunlight that sweeps away the dark, and even as far as the notorious Higgs boson, our universe is awash in waves. Professor Matt Strassler, host of the website "Of Particular Significance", and Andrea Wittgens, ``silver-tongued'' singer-songwriter-pianist, join forces to reflect on these notions from perspectives scientific, sonic and poetic. They'll sing us tales of the unknown, turn the volume down to the quantum level, shine photons on the mysterious particles of nature, and have fun doing it! And you'll leave knowing why the grandest of all musical instruments is the universe itself."

- Private Lawn Party!
- As many of you may be noticing, house concerts in all their forms are a blossoming trend all over the world. They provide a much needed return to an accessible and vibrant live music scene for people of all ages and in many cases they allow independent musicians (some of whom set up national tours of living rooms) to make a viable living doing what they love.
If you are interested in finding out more about living room concerts in general or would like to have me play in your home please don't hesitate to contact me - I'd love to talk to you about it! You don't need a mansion and a lot of fancy gear. Just a group of enthusiastic music lovers and a patch of floor carpet or lawn!

ABOUT LIVING ROOM CONCERTS:
If you've never been to a house concert before you are missing a particularly sweet slice of life! I love doing these - they are intimate and warm and just the way music should be heard: up close and personal. All you need to do is invite the guests. I'll provide the live music (and necessary instruments/equipment). Usually it's two sets with time to mingle and get refreshments in between. You don't have to pay a hefty fee either! My compensation is a suggested donation from each guest (usually anywhere from $10-20). Some hosts like to set up a table by the door and others prefer to pass a hat at intermission.

-
Cherry Lanes:
127 N. 4th Ave, Sturgeon Bay, WI, USA
(MAP)
- The second spooky installment from the Dark Songs Song Fest, this bash is a costume party from 8-midnight featuring a mixed-media performance of music, visual art, film, puppetry, poetry and many other surprises.
The background: You may remember that this past June I was a part of the wonderful Steel Bridge Festival Song Festival. Well those folks are doing it again, this time with a dark twist, in the annual “Dark Songs” week of collaborative songwriting, recording, and night time performances in celebration of Halloween.
Sturgeon Bay’s famed Holiday Music Motel will once again host a mixture of local and worldwide talent will fuel the event, including Door County's Purgatory Hill, Abnormal Cattle, and Jeanne Kuhns, along with imports James Hall, and Geri X, Kim Maning, and Johnny Lowebow, to name just a few.
Throughout the last week of October, the motel will be filled, half with invited songwriters and half with paying guests. Songs written during the week will be recorded in the motel's in-house studio by world-class engineers Billy Tripplet (Prince, James Brown, etc.) and Steve Hamilton. The second disc in the motel's "Holiday Series" (Dark Songs For Halloween Vol.2) will be produced on-site.
Each evening, the songwriters will form teams to collaboratively write songs, then document them in the Holiday Music Motel studio. The songs will debut in two special Halloween weekend shows, Friday night at The Ladder House, and Saturday night at Cherry Lanes.
As in Steel Bridge SongFest's Construction Zone, songwriters are challenged to write around a theme. For this event, the theme is “Dark Songs for Halloween.” According to pat mAcdonald, creator of te event, "The theme is flexible. Morbid is okay, dark humor even better."

The Holiday Motel was the first motel in Door County. Built in the Cubist Modern (or Modern International) design, it opened its doors on Saturday. May 31, 1952. In May 2007 it was purchased by a group of musicians and music enthusiasts (including Pat MacDonald, Jackson Browne and many more). This group came together while working on the Steel Bridge Songfest (SBSF), a benefit to raise money and awareness for the preservation of the historic Michigan Street Bridge. The motel sits at the approach to the bridge.
